Using social media to find potential sources

Annie Anderson -

If you've ever wondered how to use social media to find potential sources, this resource is for you. A few of us at PIN Central (myself, Jeff Jones and Alison Brody) attended a webinar a few weeks ago hosted by NCME with NPR's Luis Clemens who shared best practices and discussed the value of developing more diverse sources in journalism. You can watch the webinar and read the notes here. Some highlights:

  • Search Craigslist for very personal stories from people not on other media
  • Search Facebook updates
  • Search trending topics on Twitter and those who contribute to them

So whether you use LinkedIn to find groups of people with a common interest or what's trending on YouTube, this webinar and accompanying notes will definitely help in your outreach to new sources.
